Court shuts down Navalny campaign foundation

Meshchansky Court of Moscow has liquidated Pyatoye Vremya Goda (“Fifth Season”), the fund that was a legal entity of Alexey Navalny’s election campaign, Mediazona reported.

It was the Justice Ministry that sought the liquidation as it had found violations in its charter. According to the agency, the organization had been violating the law on personal data being engaged in non-statutory activities: for instance, it paid rent for its premises in different cities. Meanwhile, the charter says that media support is the purpose of the fund.

Vyacheslav Gimadi, who represents the politician in court, said that the ministry had not provided an example of a single gross violation that could have been the reason to shut down the fund. According to the lawyers, the ministry should have notified the organization of the violations in advance so that it could eliminate them. The lawyers argued that the there was no problem with personal data or the charter.

The fund's director, Leonid Volkov, who is also Navalny's campaign manager, said that the lawyers were going to challenge the court's decision.
