Ex-governor Nikita Belykh gets married in Lefortovo jail

Nikita Belykh, the former Kirov region governor, got married to Ekaterina Reifert in the Lefortovo jail today, his lawyer Andrei Grokhotov told Interfax.

Belykh proposed to her at a court session in the Presnensky court of Moscow October 11. It happened after Reifert took the witness stand.

The former governor said he had been given permission to get married in July, but the jail authorities lost the document. A copy of the permit sent to Reifert also disappeared. Belykh’s fiancée was not allowed into the jail, as she is a witness on the trial and not a member of his immediate family.

Nikita Belykh was detained in Moscow last June. Soon after, he was dismissed from the post of governor.

The investigators believe that Belykh took two bribes for a total of €600.000. The defendant denies the charges.

Last month, the ex-governor was moved to Matrosskaya Tishina prison hospital in a poor state. The defense kept asking the court to hospitalize Belykh for months, as he complained about high blood pressure and blood sugar levels.
