Sen. Kerimov back in France after Russian trip

Senator Suleyman Kerimov returned to France, where he is accused of non-payment of taxes and money laundering, after a short trip to Russia, BBC Russia reported citing the prosecutor's office in Nice.

French law enforcement authorities allowed Kerimov to visit Russia to see his sick relative between January 19 and 21 inclusive.

Yesterday the Federation Council said in a press release that Kerimov had a meeting with Valentina Matvienko, the speaker of the upper house of parliament, in Moscow. It is not specified as to when the meeting was held.

The Russian senator was detained in France last November. Local law enforcement agencies believe that Kerimov had hidden €400 million from the tax authorities when buying his five villas. Kerimov could have illegally brought up to €750 million into the country.
